GetInfo with a new look and many new services online

The new interface of the GetInfo homepage is Simpler - Clearer - Better
For all search enquiries there is now just one search access point. The differentiation in the overall, specialist subject and TIB catalogue searches has been abandoned for the sake of greater clarity. The TIB’s entire inventory can be searched using this one search access point. In order to expand or narrow the search, the database selection offers a choice of several technical and scientific databases.
In addition, the collection of the German National Library of Medicine (ZB MED) is now searchable via the new search access point. GetInfo has thus expanded its subject spectrum with the addition of medicine, health, nutrition, environment and agriculture. Orders for material from ZB MED’s collection can be conveniently made via GetInfo. This service has been made possible by Goportis – the Leibniz Library Network for Research Information - and does not incur any additional charges.
An overview of new services:
• Publications subject to a licence now display the licence fee directly on the document • Login-free access to open access documents

Operation of FIZ Technik databases has been restricted until further notice
As part of the FIZ Technik e.V. and the FIZ-Fachinformationszentrum-Technik-Inform GmbH insolvency proceedings, the licence databases have been suspended with effect from the 1st December 2010.
For GetInfo and the campus of the Leibniz University of Hannover these databases are concerned: CEABA/VtB, DKF, INSPEC, RSWB.
A solution is being sought, within the restrictions of the insolvency proceedings, to allow the FIZ Technik databases to continue operating. Once this solution is found, it should then be possible to offer the CEABA/VtB, DKF, INSPEC and RSWB databases via GetInfo again.

Infratest Study on the TIB’s Value and Benefits
Survey confirms worthwhile investment
Last year the TIB asked itself if the public investment into the library – around 23 million euros – is justified and whether it represents good value for money for the knowledge society. The TIB and TNS Infratest conducted a wide-ranging online survey. 663 responses from companies, research institutions and public facilities gave a very clear picture; the TIB is indispensable for the research and science location of Germany and it generates 3.80 euros added value. This means that for every euro invested in the library, the TIB generates a 3.8 times higher gain for its customers.
Furthermore, the study revealed enormous support for the TIB when it comes to future strategies. Our task of taking on new areas including increasingly offering digital media and multimedia objects such as film and 3D models, along with our work on tackling the issue of long-term archiving and digital preservation, is being supported by 75% of the respondents.
We would like to warmly thank those who participated in this demanding study about the value and benefits of the TIB and also for the helpful advice and suggestions made which we are sure will assist us in making our services even more attractive to you.
Details on these significant findings using the “contingent valuation method”, as well as further information, can be found in the Study (shortly available on the TIB's Website).
What do you think about the results? What have your experiences been with the TIB? We would be pleased to receive your responses, be they positive, constructive, critical ...
To the press release

At a press conference at the TIB on the 23rd November 2010, the Minister for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony, Professor Johanna Wanka, presented the results of the study.

DataCite Members met in London
On the 1st and 2nd December 2010, the DataCite members converged for their second general assembly and also their first anniversary celebration at the British Library in London.
The focus was on the meetings of the existing DataCite Working Groups on the themes of metadata and technical infrastructure, as well as the exchange of experiences in respect of the allocation of DOIs and the contact with data centres.
In a strategy meeting, the members developed ideas and concepts for the future of DataCite and discussed the steps which need to be taken in the next few years. At the meeting, the admission of new partners was also decided. As of the 1st January 2011, DataCite will have 15 members as well as 4 associate members from 11 nations. With the German National Library of Economics – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics being a new member, all three Goportis partners are now also DataCite members.
Further DataCite events are planned for 2011. After the great success of the DataCite Summer Meeting in Hannover this year, there will be a Summer Meeting in 2011, too, which should take place in September in California.
For the Third Successive Time, the TIB/UB has won an Award for Equal Opportunities
For the third successive time, the TIB/UB has received the TOTAL E-QUALITY Award. In their rationale, the jury highlighted in particular the successful integration of aspects of equal opportunities at all levels of the organisation. The planned expansion of the personnel development staff unit through the inclusion of questions on organisational development, as well as the establishment of an emergency childcare facility, were also viewed very positively. Concept Study: "Networked Primary Data Infrastructure for Scientists’ Workplaces in Chemistry"
A concept study has been conducted under the project management of the TIB together with FIZ CHEMIE and Prof. Gregor Fels (Universität Paderborn) in order to research how chemistry research data can be incorporated into a future primary data infrastructure to ensure long-term storage. The study has also looked at how to make the chemistry research data citable, linkable and searchable with the aid of DOIs (digital object identifiers).
Until now, the handling of primary data in chemistry has not had any commonly approved standards concerning subsequent usability and long-term accessibility. Data security has not been safeguarded.
The concept study analyses the scientific workflow of primary data in chemistry and identifies possible solutions for a prototype realisation for other specialist areas. [more]
TechLib Meeting 2010
Europe’s leading technical libraries met at the TIB for the 5th TechLib Meeting on the 15th November.
The management of the TIB, the TU Delft Library (Holland), the ETH Zurich Library (Switzerland) and the Technical Information Center of Denmark discussed the future challenges to a scientific information structure. This includes the development of alternative licensing models such as SCOAP3, questions of long-term archiving and digital preservation, open access to research data as well as the handling of multimedia objects such as AV media.
The first meeting of TechLib took place in 2005, also at the TIB. The TechLib collaboration is also the birthplace of the international DataCite initiative which aims to ensure the citability of research data.

Your participation in the Smartphone survey
Many of you participated in the GetInfo survey about the use of Smartphones in the last issue of the GetInfo Newsletter. Many thanks for your interest and support.
Two winners from Germany and Sweden were drawn from all the participants. The two winners will be pleased to be able to have five orders from the GetInfo specialised portal free of charge.
The results of the survey were clear. Nearly all the participants wanted a newsletter optimisation for Smartphones – a wish we are happy to fulfil in 2011 and one which will be able to offer you a comfortable reading format.

CeBIT 2011: The TIB presents PROBADO 3D
The TIB is presenting the application fields of PROBADO’s 3D models at the CeBIT 2011 from the 1st to the 5th March at their joint stand with the State of Lower Saxony (Hall 9, Stand B24). The PROBADO (www.probado.de) digital library project centre for research information, funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation), is developing processes for automated content-based indexing, search and display of multimedia types of media.
PROBADO 3D has been developed by the TIB in collaboration with the computer science institutes of the University of Bonn, the Technical University Darmstadt/FhG IGD and the Technical University Graz. It will be going online before CeBIT with content-based indexing methods and a visual interactive search for 3D models.
