Growing Number of Students from South Asia in Germany | | | | |
|
|
Germany is becoming an increasingly popular destination for higher education among students from around the world. The latest figures from the Winter Semester 2025/26 show that 516,820 international students account for 18% of the total student population in Germany.
The South Asian countries of India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka contribute significantly to this number. These numbers have also been steadily growing. Here is a glimpse of the change from last year to this year:
• Sri Lanka: 31.57% increase, amounting to 478 new students
• Nepal: 24.74% increase, amounting to 582 new students
• India: 17.50% increase, amounting to 10,397 new students
• Bhutan: 9.52% increase, amounting to 4 new students
• Bangladesh: 7.95% increase, amounting to 642 new students
Together, these five countries have 83,507 students enrolled at German universities as of 2025-26.
But these figures represent more than just numbers and statistics. The increasing presence of students from these countries highlights Germany’s appeal as a hub for innovation, research, and higher education across a wide range of disciplines, as well as a destination for building professional careers.

● Are willing and able to attend the Young Ambassadors Training Workshop which will take place online in November 2026
