Newsletter June 2026

Dear reader,

Our world is more connected than ever: people, ideas and crises move across borders at unprecedented speed. While this creates new opportunities for exchange, it also intensifies challenges such as migration, societal polarisation and shifting geopolitical dynamics. These developments also bring attention to new areas of interest in academic research. A recent example is the new Cluster of Excellence Cross-Cultural Philology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), which was launched in 2026 with funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Similar questions of cultural exchange, mobility, and transformation are the focus of this issue, which introduces important research initiatives and offers insight into societal change within Germany itself. As usual, we also have new funding opportunities, upcoming events and news about life in Germany for you. Enjoy!

PODCAST

What drives societal change in Germany?

Societies never stand still; history offers many examples for this. In German, there is even a word for it: Transformationsgesellschaft. It describes a society that is undergoing deep and structural change. One of the most significant transformations in recent German history was the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990. But how has reunification shaped German society today? This episode of the History & Politics Podcast by the Körber-Stiftung explores this question and more. The hosts discuss different factors contributing to societal change, such as demographic shifts, religion or geopolitical crises, offering valuable insights into the current transformations shaping Germany. Give the episode a listen and get inspired for your next research topic – or just your next trip to Germany!
