Newsletter July 2025

Dear reader,

Whether we live in the city or countryside, whether we travel ourselves or send goods across the globe: few topics connect science, society and everyday life as directly as mobility. Developments and innovations in mobility can have enormous consequences for economies, the environment and our quality of life. For many people, mobility is also an emotional topic – just ask anyone involved in the German Autobahn speed limit debate!

Consequently, the German Federal Government has made mobility – especially automation, digitalisation and sustainability – a key focus of its innovation and research funding. And: the country’s automotive industry provides roughly a third of all German industry R&D spending. This makes Germany the ideal destination for mobility researchers and innovators. Explore some of the key players and resources in this issue of our newsletter!

PS We will be on summer break until the September issue. Below, you will find a higher number of current calls to make up for it!
Wherever you see this tag, the post connects to our monthly spotlight topic.

Applied research for mobility transformation: Fraunhofer People Mobility

As Europe’s largest organisation for applied research, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft operates more than 70 institutes across Germany. Fraunhofer holds a unique position in Germany’s research landscape: while basic funding comes from the state, most of their revenue is earned through contract work – a system that ensures a smooth innovation transfer from research into industry. Fraunhofer People Mobility represents this mission at work: a multidisciplinary network of six Fraunhofer Institutes, it combines expertise in fields like urban planning, public transport, big data, e-mobility, acceptance research and transport policy. Last month’s results:
If you are working in marine science – what motivated you most to pursue a career in this field?

Marine scientists appear to be a remarkably even-tempered group – a trait that’s clearly reflected in our survey results. Exactly one third of participants selected each of the three main motivations for working in marine science: environmental impact, field work and global collaboration. All equally compelling reasons!
