Newsletter March 2025

Dear reader,

While World Quantum Day on 14 April is still a month away, the year already offers plenty of insights, events and research news around everything quantum. And no wonder: 2025 is the UN’s International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, marking the 100th anniversary of the formulation of quantum mechanics.

Germany aims to become a world leader in quantum technologies and has been investing considerably into quantum research and development. In 2024, IBM opened its first European quantum data centre in Southern Germany – only the company’s second facility of this kind worldwide.

In today’s newsletter, you will find valuable resources and inspiring content around quantum research in Germany, particularly quantum computing – from study programmes at the Quantum Alliance to inspiring interviews. Last but not least, our new section “Exploring groundbreaking research” offers a selection of diverse and unique insights into German research – provided every month by the research community itself. Enjoy your read!
Last month, we invited our readers to take part in a mini survey about this newsletter. Many of you already filled out our questionnaire – thank you for your participation! For those who missed the February newsletter, there is still a chance to take part:

INTERVIEW

The science of the inconceivable: interview with quantum physicist Tommaso Calarco

Quantum physics has changed our lives decisively in recent decades. One hundred years after the mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics, physicist Professor Tommaso Calarco from Forschungszentrum Jülich talks about the developments that have shaped quantum science since then, the current research at Jülich and the progress that can be expected in the coming years.

Dream or nightmare? Germans evaluate the four-day working week

More time for family, household chores, sports or pets – the benefits of the four-day working week seem obvious. But not everyone is convinced: longer daily workhours, a loss of flexibility and troubles with customer contact are some of the reasons cited by employees and companies that decided against a shorter working week after a trial period. In the end, however, most trial participants opted to stay with the four-day week. Find out more in this video!

EXHIBITION

Touring exhibition “RETHINKING PHYSICS” highlights female quantum researchers

Women are still heavily underrepresented in the world of quantum science. Time for change! To mark the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the exhibition “RETHINKING PHYSICS” puts female quantum researchers centre stage. The touring exhibition is presented by the Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat – Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter (JMU Würzburg and TU Dresden) and will be shown worldwide. Find all dates and locations (international locations to follow) as well as video previews on the exhibition website.
