© DAAD ASND Dr Michael Harms, Deputy Secretary General, DAAD welcoming Arthur Rapp, Director, DAAD Regional Office, New Delhi
This year marks an extraordinary milestone for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as we celebrate 100 years of fostering international academic cooperation. It is also a special moment for our South Asia presence: the DAAD Office in India celebrates its 65th anniversary, a testament to decades of partnership, knowledge exchange, and shared academic ambition. The scale and dynamism of the region continue to impress. Today, 60,000 Indian students are pursuing their studies in Germany, making them the largest international student group in the country. India’s higher education landscape—comprising over 1,100 universities, 40,000 colleges and 43 million students—reflects an academic ecosystem whose size equals more than half of Germany’s population. Coupled with 92,000+ patent applications filed in 2023, the region’s innovative drive is unmistakable. The DAAD is proud to be part of this vibrant environment, coordinating an active network not only in India but also in neighbouring countries. I am humbled when I consider the depth and potential of academic and scientific collaboration across South Asia. I am deeply honoured to have been entrusted by the DAAD with this responsibility and sincerely grateful to Dr. Katja Lasch for her generous support during the transition. I am truly excited to work with our highly professional and welcoming teams in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka as we continue to strengthen academic bridges between Germany and the region. - Arthur Rapp, Director, DAAD Regional Office New Delhi

DAAD Research Ambassadors 2025-28
Orientation Meet 2025, New Delhi
The Research Ambassador Programme began in India over two decades ago, originally known as DAAD Vertrauensdozenten. Since then, it has evolved into a dynamic, regional network that now extends beyond India, to Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Together, this community represents the diversity and strength of South Asia’s academic and research landscape. DAAD Research Ambassadors 2025-28 came together from 16 to 18 November 2025 at New Delhi for an orientation meet. This cohort of 25 members reflects diversity in every sense, across disciplines, institutions and countries. Their expertise spans fields such as molecular biology, chemistry, engineering, policy studies, management and the social sciences. They are connected with a wide range of leading universities and research institutions in Germany and affiliated with important universities and research institutions in South Asia. DAAD Research Ambassadors have always been the DAAD’s most trusted advocates. They open doors to new partnerships, connect academic communities and provide invaluable guidance to students and researchers aspiring to study or collaborate with Germany. Most importantly, they bring authenticity and credibility, their advice is grounded in first-hand experience and a deep commitment to knowledge exchange.
