| | | | | | Dear Reader, we want to take a look back: 2025 was an exciting year full of intensive field trials and cutting-edge research. What a journey it has been! In December, the BioMonitor4CAP project team gathered in Berlin to discuss the project’s progress, share first results, and align on the next steps. The meeting brought together experts from across Europe and strengthened collaboration as the project moves into its next and last phase. BioMonitor4CAP is making strong progress toward advancing biodiversity monitoring in European agricultural landscapes. From innovative monitoring technologies to stakeholder engagement and policy pathways, the project continues to build the foundations for more sustainable and biodiversity‑friendly farming across Europe and beyond. The following key insights capture the most significant achievements and progress made throughout the project so far: - Advanced monitoring tools tested across Europe: eDNA, acoustic devices, camera traps, UAVs and remote sensing methods have been successfully deployed and validated in real agricultural conditions.
- Soil, insect, bird and habitat indicators refined: Multi‑year data collection supports robust, scalable biodiversity metrics aligned with EU policy needs.
- Strong stakeholder engagement: Farmers, advisors and policymakers across six countries contributed insights to shape practical, acceptable biodiversity measures.
- Policy‑ready “bio‑schemes” developed: Four CAP‑aligned biodiversity measures (Green Spaces, Soil Health, Beneficial Insects, Bird Diversity) were designed with clear indicators, metrics and payment logic.
- Growing European network: An agrobiodiversity observatory database was created, strengthening science–policy connections and supporting long‑term replication.
Join us as we continue building a more resilient and biodiversity‑friendly future for Europe’s agricultural landscapes and dive into the updates below! | |

| | | | BioMonitor4CAP 3rd Annual Project Meeting | In December 2025 the BioMonitor4CAP consortium gathered for its 3rd Annual Project Meeting at the Fraunhofer Forum Berlin, organized by DLG e.V. and Fraunhofer IDMT in collaboration with the coordination team at LIB Bonn. For three inspiring days, our team came together to share knowledge, review progress, and plan the next steps as we enter the final year of the project - driving innovation in biodiversity monitoring for agriculture. The meeting kicked off with comprehensive updates on all work packages, followed by interactive workshops focused on preparing upcoming deliverables. A major achievement celebrated during this session was the completion of data collection - an extraordinary effort resulting in 28.8 terabytes of data, including audio recordings, high-resolution images, UAV and satellite data gathered across three field seasons. This complex dataset forms the backbone of our research and will enable insightful analyses in the months ahead. The second day centered on shaping the future of biodiversity monitoring through workshops on roadmaps, policy recommendations, and collaborative scientific publications. A highlight was the inspiring presentation by Bob Klein Langhorst (Antonie) on “Nematodes as an Indicator for Soil Health”. With the help of AI-based digital extraction methods, nematodes can now be automatically detected and classified. An innovative approach that opens up new possibilities for monitoring functional biodiversity and assessing soil health. To conclude the meeting, participants explored the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Spreewald, a stunning water meadow landscape renowned for its natural biodiversity. Even in winter, the Spreewald offered breathtaking scenery. The group enjoyed a guided walk through the picturesque village of Lehde, reinforcing the importance of preserving such unique habitats. A big thank you to Fraunhofer Forum for hosting us, the State Office of Environment / Spreewald Biosphere Reserve for introducing this remarkable region, and to all partners and participants for making this event a success! | |
