Thomas Durand
Promoting diversity, quality, openness and inclusiveness

By Prof. Thomas Durand, President, European Academy of Management (EURAM)

On 26 June, you are going to kick off the EURAM (European Academy of Management) 2019 Conference. What are the main goals and outcomes you hope to achieve with this conference?

The European Academy of Management aims at developing management research and education to improve knowledge and practice about how to lead organized collective action. EURAM fosters a friendly and professional forum of management academics promoting diversity, quality, openness and inclusiveness. EURAM cultivates the value stemming from its European roots while reaching out to the world, hence connecting with both national academies and international societies.

We want to make the conference a stimulating arena where participants can share, discuss and develop their research ideas, interact with colleagues and learn from them, design and set up new joint projects – and enjoy themselves.

What will be the highlights of this year’s event?

The doctoral colloquium, the “Meet the Editors” session to exchange with those who publish the research results in their journals, panels with keynotes from the business world.

What does Lisbon offer as a destination for your conference?

A warm city, filled with history and European culture, open to the world. A great host university (ICSTE-IUL) in the heart of Lisbon with nice facilities, and plenty of hotel accommodation all around at decent prices, walking distance from the magnificent Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

How do Lisbon and its community benefit from the conference?

The 1800 conference participants and their partners add up to over 2000 visitors who will get a flavour of Portugal through the charming city of Lisbon, many of them staying over the weekend, bringing back both the spirit of Fado and an understanding of the amazing economic development of the country over the last decades.

Do you offer virtual attendance to those who cannot come?

The most significant sessions are going to be taped and broadcasted via EURAM’s website and YouTube channel.

What are currently the main challenges for EURAM as a society, as well as for the conference?

EURAM aims at promoting a productive dialogue with the world of practice in companies and beyond, serving the needs of students in business schools and more generally investigating grand societal challenges from a management research perspective to bring specific contributions to society at large.
