Dear Ms. Kieke,

The sight of the mast of a sailing ship makes many people feel nostalgic. Only few know that modern wind technologies could be essential for the green shipping industry of the future. In the EU research project WASP, our Hapag-Lloyd Center for Shipping and Global Logistics (CSGL) is investigating whether and how the use of wind propulsions saves fuel, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and is profitable for shipping companies. Our public webinar provided information on the status quo, as did this video featuring my colleague Dr.  Vasileios Kosmas. I also recommend reading our interview with wind pioneer Scandlines.

My research focuses on sustainability in shipping and ports, energy transition, alternative propulsion systems, and renewable low-carbon fuels. Contact me to find out more about my research and how it can be useful to you and your company.

Further topics in this issue: “We need to talk!” insists Prof. Moritz Petersen in an interview on knowledge transfer in sustainable logistics. What about the relationship between the U.S. and China? Watch this video talk on international trade with visiting professor Ralph Ossa (University of Zurich) and Prof. Marcos Ritel. And finally, our recent leadership study shows that top executives are hardly at risk when it comes to burnout.

Wishing you fair winds and following seas,

Dr.  Michele Acciaro
Associate Professor of Maritime Logistics, Director of Hapag-Lloyd Center for Shipping and Global Logistics (CSGL)
