EU Research Commissioner Carlos Moedas at ZEW - "Europe Must
Increase the Flexibility of its Markets":
The key to competitiveness can be summed up quite simply: More
innovation results in greater productivity, and therefore more
growth. Research and development, however, are essential drivers of
innovation. The critical question therefore is how results from
research can be translated into innovations in markets. Carlos
Moedas, EU Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation
believes that in the future, innovation will increasingly occur at
the points of intersection between various research disciplines.

CH Indicator of Economic Sentiment
Economic Expectations Increase Further:
The The ZEW-CS-Indicator for the economic sentiment in Switzerland
has risen by 9.0 points to a reading of 11.5 points in April 2016.
This increase further widens the gap between the indicator’s current
positive value and negative territory, thereby continuing the trend
seen in the previous month. The current economic situation is also
assessed as being slightly more positive in comparison to that of the
previous month, with a reading of minus 0.1 points. The ZEW-CS
Indicator reflects the expectations of the surveyed financial market
experts regarding the economic development in Switzerland on a six
month time horizon. It is calculated on a monthly basis by the
Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in cooperation
with Credit Suisse (CS), Zurich.

ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment
Economic Outlook Improves:
The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany has increased for
the second time in a row in April 2016. The index has gained
6.9 points compared to the previous month, now totaling 11.2 points
(long-term average: 24.5 points). "Surprisingly positive economic
news from China seems to have improved the sentiment amongst financial
market experts. On balance, however, the continued poor growth in
China and other important emerging markets continues to be a burden
for the German export industry. Furthermore, concern about Great
Britain's possible exit from the EU seems to be having a negative
impact", comments Professor Sascha Steffen, Head of the Research
Department "International Finance and Financial Management" at ZEW.
